Watched movie “Million Dollar Baby”
January 21st, 2005
Actually boxing is only very small part of the movie, so don’t be fooled thinking this is just one of those “ehhh” boxing movies.
When I knew this movie is about boxing, I told myself that I prob will not spend more than 15 mins on this movie. It turned out this is a typical error due to stereotype. Within hours that I finished the movie, I was keeping thinking about movie. I was so deeply touched by the sotry, by the emotions, and by the interactions between the characters. (gee.. this is deep)
This is a sad movie, but it is thought provoking. Soon after you saw the acting from from Clint Eastwood and Hilary Swank, in the background of a dark and old gym, you can expect the tone of the movie. Eastwood plays Frankie, an old box trainer always tends to overprotect his player after he faulted himself for the injury leading to Freeman’s blindness. Maggie is a waitress who is very determined to realize her dream - to be a million dollar box star. Maggie tried almost all she can to impress Frankie so that he can be her boss, she tried and failed, then tried again. Finally the door is opened after even I am moved by Maggie’s strong will. Yeah, then you see bloody fight scenes intermittenly, but most of the time, you are envolved in the building of the relationship among three characters, and your heart were truly enjoying when you saw the victory. That sounds a very typical holywood style … but you are wrong… story quickly turned into its sad part when you thought that million dollar is almost at hand. I guess I have to stop now so that you still have incentive to watch this move.
Yeah… the scripts are flawless, the story well connected, the scene are seamless crafted, but what was amazing was the performance of three characters. These people are just so real and natural. You truly enjoy when they laughed and fell the pain when they were hurt. I normally faw asleep when I watch drama, this is one of the few dramas that it get you involved in the story as if you are part of it. I truly hope this movie can get Oscars, this is better than Aviator.
Go to see the movie while it is still in the theater or get the DVD when it is out. 10 out of 10.
